Blender 2.8 freezes and crashes my whole Mac #70224

I am running Blender 2.8 (downloaded two weeks ago) with my iMac, Mojave 10.14.6. I have plenty of Ram.

Blender crashes my computer when some random file refuses to save. The beach ball goes on and on, and nothing happens.
So I manually turn off my computer, turn it on again, and when I try to reopen that problem file again, it won't open, and crashes my computer again. The size of the file seems irrelevant. I have lost hours of work because of these crashes.

I hope someone can help me. So far, I have found no answer to my question online.
Thank you.
MarieH

Hi @MarieHZ18,

If you have installed or enabled non-official add-ons, please try starting Blender 2.80 from a terminal. Here is how, assuming you installed Blender under Applications

  • open terminal
  • run the command /Applications/Blender.app/Contents/MacOS/Blender --factory-startup
  • try opening one of the files that crashes your Blender
  • take note whether this works or not.

Now start Blender 2.80 normally then please go to Help >> Save System Info and attach the resulting text file to this report.

Further, if you can figure out the smallest, simplest .blend file that does cause the crash please attach that here as well.

Hi Nathan,

Thank you so much for responding to my question. I tried to do what you suggested... based on what I understood. I am not a techie, and this is a bit hard for me. Anyway I found the Terminal, typed the command, tried of open my file, and program froze again. The difference this time is that my computer didn't crash (Yeah! ) allowing me easily Force Quit Blender. So I am attaching the System Info and the smallest file that is causing the system. Many thanks,
MarieH{F7774975}

Hi @MarieHZ18,

There is nothing that stands really out from your system-info.txt (thank you for that).

Let us test one more thing: please download the latest Blender dmg for MacOS from https://builder.blender.org/download/

Once downloaded double-click the dmg. Once you see the Blender icon hold the Control (^) button and click on that Blender icon. Select Open from the menu you are presented. Answer to the next dialog so that you Blender can be started. Let me know if this starts your Blender fine or whether it crashes/freezes.

Fingers crossed!

Hi Nathan,

I have tried what you suggested-- trying 2.81. I got the same result, and this time, my computer stalled.
Any thing else? Or couldn't it be my computer?
Many thanks.

That could be some issue with your hard drive (generating some .blend file corruption)? But that’s really a wild guess, chasing that kind of weird bug that only happens on one machine can be very long and hard.

I’m sorry we cannot help more, but without a proper reproducible case of the issue, we cannot really investigate it. Thanks for the report anyway.

I'm running into the same issue, freeze, with Blender 2.8.2.
It happens when I do some mouse action like 'control/select vertex'. I can see something wrong where the blender command output bar at the bottom, outputs tons of commands. Perhaps some infinite loop?

I've frozen my mac a few times now. I'll try using 2.7 again to see if this problem continues.

I'm trying 2.8.3 alpha right now. Looks stable so far. I didn't add an add-on 'bool tools' like in 2.8.2, just in case that's the problem.

Hi, I have the very same issue as OP and the very same version of the system, however I use Blender 3.0.0 and work on MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports) with external Display

what I noticed so far:

  1. crashes occurs more often when I have some Chrome windows opened in the background - I have no idea if it's related, but recently I turned on "Hardware acceleration" within Chrome browser.
  2. crashes occurs more often when I do some basic stuff like turning on "Rendered" view port mode or "Material Preview" or playing an animation in the viewport. I will observe it a bit more, but I'm almost sure it doesn't happen in "Solid" viewport mode.
  3. When the crash happens - at first the fans turn on and work like crazy, but after a while they go silent and nothing happens. I can move my mouse cursor but it's endlessly spinning beach ball. - the only thing at this moment is to hard restart my Mac - I can't go to any other app, I can't change the desktop with three fingers swipe, touchbar doesn't respond. I can't do anything.
  4. last time it happened I had Activity Monitor opened on the second display and to my surprise - Blender wasn't on top of the list high CPU usage.
  5. It started to happen recently, but I have no idea what changed in my setup. My addons list is pretty short - except the defaults - I have node wrangler and Outline Helper.

I wish I could provide more info, but unfortunately that's all I have for now.
