Graphics card: GeForce GTX 1060 6GB/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 436.15

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.82 (sub 1), branch: master, commit date: 2019-10-27 17:59, hash: dd904f6761
Worked: (optional)

Short description of error
[Please fill out a short description of the error here]

Sculpt mode.

When you mask freehand with the Mask tool, and set the direction to subtract, then you can unmask the areas that you draw.

When you mask with the Box Mask or Lasso Mask tool, and set the direction to subtract, then you still mask what you catch with the tool. It does not unmask the selection as expected.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
[Please describe the exact steps needed to reproduce the issue]
[Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible)]

Open Blender, switch to Sculpt mode. Activate the Box Mask too. In the Brush settings set the direction to subtract. Select a part of the mesh. It will mask this part, not unmask.

That the brush is SculptDraw should be a clue though. Box/lasso masks aren't brushes. Click drag adds, ctrl drag subtracts.

Ah, indeed, thanks. But how can a user know this? And how can a user know that this is no brush like the other mask method?

A user with no experience? Can't know that. One could even argue that they even shouldn't know that. But that's not a topic for here, I guess.

That option is part of the brush, not the Box Mask Tool.
Maybe the brush panel should be hidden when the tool is not a brush (what do you think @PabloDobarro?)
But this is not a bug.
Closing.
