Select Box doesn't change the object shown in the properties panel #71326

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.18362 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 1050 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 431.86

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.81 (sub 15), branch: master, commit date: 2019-10-23 04:02, hash: b9dd87f0cb
(Happens in 2.80.75 and 2.82.1 as well)

Short description of error
I don't know if this is intentional or not, but it feels strange that when I'm selecting only one object via the select box, the properties panel does not show the properties of this new selection. It only changes the object shown in properties tab if I click directly on it.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
For this, you can use the default scene:

  • Open blender

  • Click on any object, for example, the default light

  • In the properties panel, you will see the light properties. So far so good.

  • Select the default cube (or camera) using the select box tool.
    - Expected: The properties panel showing the cube (or camera) properties, because it's the only object selected.
    - What happens: The properties panel still shows the last object properties, even if they are not selected anymore.

It is perhaps not very intuitive, but that's how it's supposed to work. Box selection doesn't change the active object, because it has no sense of selection order. Active object doesn't have to be selected.

Like @Stan_Pancakes said, this has caused confusion before [see e.g. #66189 (Issue with box select and active object.), {#65219}], but atm. this is working as designed, blender has always worked this way.

Will have to close this one, thx for the report anyways...
