System Information
Operating system: Win64
Graphics card: NVidia

Blender Version
Broken: 2.81 of today
Worked-ish: old dialog

Short description of error

When you past in the full path to a file, the new dialog messes it up, then doesn't open it.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. open up a file dialog ( i used a font browser)
  2. Paste in the full path to a file and hit enter (i used f:\Downloads\NotoSansOldTurkic-hinted (1)\NotoSansOldTurkic-Regular.ttf from #71273)
  3. Dialog changes it to f__Downloads_NotoSansOldTurkic-hinted (1)_NotoSansOldTurkic-Regular.ttf then doesn't open the file cause it's all messed up.

What previously happened

  1. open up a file dialog ( i used a font browser)
  2. Paste in the full path to a file and hit enter (i used f:\Downloads\NotoSansOldTurkic-hinted (1)\NotoSansOldTurkic-Regular.ttf from #71273)
  3. Dialog changes browses to the right folder
  4. Select the file once more to actually open it.

What should happen

  1. open up a file dialog ( i used a font browser)
  2. Paste in the full path to a file and hit enter (i used f:\Downloads\NotoSansOldTurkic-hinted (1)\NotoSansOldTurkic-Regular.ttf from #71273)
  3. Dialog goes away and opens the file.

The old behavior was not ideal, but the new dialog found a way to do a slightly worse job at this task.

I cannot confirm (Ubuntu/Linux) as a new bug.

What I have since 2.79 to be clear:

  1. If I paste it in the "file name" field, it replaces the fullpath with gibberish.
  2. If I paste it in the "folder" field, it is ok, it replaces "file name" with the filepath part of the path, and the folder (where you pasted) with the folder part.

Can you confirm you get the same behaviour on Windows?

Thanks for reporting. However this is not a bug, or at least not a new one. Closing it for now.

I also cannot confirm this on macOS. Pasting the file path into the file name field just converts that string into the file name, but I don't think that's a bug afaik.
