Face turns transparent when adding a new material in Edit mode #71388

System Information
Operating system: Windows 10
Graphics card: NVIDIA QUADRO FX 3700, but accessing the PC via Windows RDS

Note: This is only a problem on the machine I am accessing via Windows RDS. The laptop I use is not affected (also running Windows 10, but no discrete graphics card).

Blender Version
Broken: blender-2.81-9d1031b01199-windows64
Worked: Blender 2.8 (release version)

Short description of error
No error messages that I know of.
The face with the new material just disappears (it is still there in data, as can be seen in X-ray mode).
Applies to Workbench, Evee and Cycles.
Saving and reloading the file does not fix the issue.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Default cube - go to Edit mode.
Press 3 for face selection. Select any face.
Add a new material.
Click Assign. The face disappears.
Assign new material to whole cube. Face is OK again.
Assign default material to one face and that now disappears.
Also tried this on a torus with a random selection of faces, and not all selected faces disappear on assigning the new material.
Same with the cube. Select some faces and some will disappear on clicking Assign.
Have tried fixing the Normals with no effect.

This is probably a problem with the Nvidia driver because I can't reproduce it on my Radeon.

@lichtwerk, can you confirm this one?

Update: I was in error about Cycles. This only occurs in Workbench and Eevee.
Also, I have made sure the driver is the latest official version from Nvidia (R340 U14 (342.00)).

Also tried saving a cube from 2.80 with one face with a different material. It is OK in 2.80 but the face disappears on opening the file in 2.81 (today's blender-2.81-eba4a4bd73ba-windows64 build).
Out of curiosity, also tried 2.82 (also today's build) and it has the same problem.

Update:
This is effectively now fixed in Blender 2.82, although it still happens in 2.81a.
Something has changed in the two latest Blender 2.82 dev builds I have tried from today (blender-2.82-1a8642937dde-windows64) and yesterday.
I am guessing it has something to do with the overlay code refactoring that has been committed recently, but that really is a guess.

Anyway, I don't know how to close this task, but please close this or mark it as no further action or something.
Thanks.

Hi,

This has come back in the last 3 beta builds of Blender 2.82 (15th (3edd8d5b07) to 17th Jan).

The most recent build that does not exhibit the problem is Blender 2.82 from 14th Jan (blender-2.82-c56526d8b68a-windows64).

Also getting some odd visual artefacts in Solid Mode on some text converted to mesh objects, where there are a few phantom planes going across objects between vertexes that are not actually joined by lines. Some of the phantom planes also appear to be treating the object origin as a vertex. The visibility of the phantom planes changes on switching to LookDev. As before, everything looks OK in Cycles. Do you want any screenshots?

I would set the status of this item back to open, but the only options I have for Change Status are "Resolved" and "Invalid". I can open a new item if that seems necessary.

Kind regards,
Andy.

Hi @andyb2019, thanks for the information,

The problem you described seems to be another and not the one described in the report.
In this case the ideal would be to make another report.

Images help since not everyone can replicate the problem.
