System Information
Operating system: Windows 10
Graphics card: NVidia GForce GTX 1050 Ti

Blender Version
version: 2.80 (sub 75), branch: master, commit date: 2019-07-29 14:47, hash: f6cb5f5449, type:
build date: 2019-07-29, 09:44 AM

Short description of error
It is not possible to attach image textures on imported objects

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible).

  • Create new general blend file
  • import object, e.g. stl, .obj, .dae
  • define material
  • attach this material to original cube and imported object
  • add image texture to this material
    result:
Image is shown on the base cube but not on imported object
UV editing: in Edit Mode the Edges/vertices are from the base cube shown in UV Editor window, when the imported object is selected, the UV Editing window is empty

The happens even if the import model was exported from Blender before.

It's not a question of whether the object was imported, it's a question of whether the object has UVs. When it doesn't, there's nothing to map the texture with, and of course the UV editor window will be empty.
