3d viewport 'text info' overlay unclear object path #71676

System Information
Operating system: MacOS 10.15.1
Graphics card: Intel Iris Pro

Blender Version
2.80 Release, 2.81Beta Nov 19 , 2.8x-Mantaflow Branch Nov 11

Short description of error
3d viewport text overlay does not always show the correct object path as described in the docs https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/editors/3dview/startup_scene.html

The Collection name in the 'Object Info' 3d viewport overlay element is not updated when selecting objects in different collections both in the 3d view and outliner. The result is newly added objects are not added to the intended collection. The collection name does change if you click on it in the outliner and new objects are added to the displayed collection. But I would expect to be able to click on an object and add another object to that same collection without having to go find it in the outliner.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

Open default startup file, duplicate the collection, click on objects in different collections and notice that the Collection is not updated in the Object Info text overlay.

Well, this only holds true on first sight.
Turns out this displays the name of the active collection [not the one the object is in]
(And after reading the report again, it seems you already figured this out as well...)
For reference, this is when it was added 4a71102309

Most of the time we will have the active object not being a part of the active
collection. So it is important to clearly communicate what is the active
collection, so users know for instance where new or appended objects
will be added to.

So this was done on purpose.
What you suggest is that the active collection should change depending on what object is selected.
That would result in a couple of questions though:

  • if there are nested collections, which one should get nested? direct parent? topmost parent?
  • not even sure if blender should be smart here (or if user should always set active collection explicitly...)
  • maybe there should be an operator to set active collection from active object?

Anyways, this all sounds like a request (rather than e areal bug) in the end that could go to other channels https://wiki.blender.org/wiki/Communication/Contact#User_Feedback_and_Requests
Sorry for the confusion, this looked like a bug to me too at first sight...

Thanks for the quick and thorough reply, sorry to waste your time. Still is unclear in the docs so I will look to improve the description there.
