Cannot Rotate Viewport #71984

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.18362 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 1080/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 419.67

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.81 (sub 16), branch: master, commit date: 2019-11-20 14:27, hash: 26bd5ebd42
Worked: 2.8, 2.79

Short description of error
Cannot rotate the viewport intermittently in 2.81. Tried:

  • resetting to factory defaults
  • restarting the computer
  • unplugging all input devices and only using one at a time
  • updating all input devices
  • resetting all input devices to defaults
  • using multiple mice to try and rotate
  • re-installing 2.81
  • re-binding rotate to any other key or mouse button
Notably, middle mouse works fine for every interaction (pan, zoom, move around compositor, etc.) but cannot rotate the view. The context for rotation with "Shift to Axis Snap" at the bottom appears while trying to rotate, but nothing else happens. Using the same default settings and scene in both 2.8 and 2.79 I can rotate the view just fine.

In the 5 minutes of typing this response, rotation started working again (after 2+ hours of not working). Nothing at all was done on my end except to start typing here (I had been typing in those 2 hours searching for answers too). No other windows open on the computer, just FireFox and Blender.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Try to rotate view with middle click (or anything else you bind it to). Doesn't work in 2.81. 2.8 and 2.79 both work fine. All have default settings and default scenes. Very hard to intentionally reproduce as it appears intermittently.

The intermittent part sounds a bit sketchy.
You mentioned multiple input devices. Can you elaborate?

Similar reports have been due to video driver problems Is your driver up to date?
Does running blender via the blender-softwaregl script make the problem go away?

This might already be solved, see blender/blender-staging@660f0c6a0e

Please try in a new build from https://builder.blender.org/download/

[thing was that Preferences > Naviagtion > Orbit & Pan > Orbit Sensitivity could end up being 0.0 -- which prevents rotating...]

Could you check if this was the case for you as well? (and if it working in a fresh build?)

I tested with two different mice, as well as a tablet and pen with middle-click functionality. Video drivers were updated as well, forgot to mention that.

It's all working now, so a fresh install works fine as well. I do think that the Orbit Sensitivity getting set to 0 is the most likely. I took to Twitter and another user also mentioned the same problem with Orbit Sensitivity.

Although I hadn't opened the settings since 2.81 released, and it was working up until yesterday, so I'm not sure what would suddenly change it.

If this works in a fresh build, I think we have to close this.
Feel free to comment again if issues creep up again, we can always reopen in that case...
