Buggy Weight Paint Mirroring in 2.81 #72158

Blender Version
Broken: 2.81
Worked: 2.80

Short description of error
Ever since I installed 2.81. I have been having some trouble painting the weights on mirror mode. The mirroring just does not work on the vertex groups. If I try painting the weights, lets say the LeftArm group, then the weights on that vertex group will be painted on the other side instead of being painted on the symmetrical group (RightArm group)
This bug really needs to be fixed, cause weight painting non-symmetrical is a nightmare.

Of course I can fix this myself by exporting the armature and mesh into an fbx file or something else, and then import it back into a new project. But that fix won’t take long after you make a modification on the mesh. Like scaling it up or down.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible).

Get a mesh that requires symmetrical bones
Make the armature for that mesh
make sure you name the bones correctly to get the symmetry working
Assign automatic weights
Now try painting the weights with the value of 1 on a bone from the left side.
The weight will be painted on the other side of the mesh on the same vertex group selected

Mirrored painting works for me with 2.81 release and latest 2.82 build.

Did you use the Mirror options under Symmetry or the X Mirror under Options? The former seems to do what you describe but the X Mirror option duplicates newly painted weights on the mirrored vertex group (but only when Topology Mirror is not enabled).

I use the x mirror directly. It won't matter tho cause that option activates in the option the same way. Using 2.80 fixes the problem. Was something changed in the weight paint mode and I wasn't paying attention?

Yes, looks like that part of the Tool Settings bar works in a different way now. Actually it is quite misleading in 2.80 because the X button and the Mirror X choice in the menu right next to the button have different functionality. 2.81 and 2.82 have three buttons for enabling each of X, Y, Z symmetry and the related drop-down matches these.

Anyway, the Options drop-down menu contains the correct X Mirror option in any Blender 2.8x version.

I found a discussion related to the confusion with the mirroring options: https://developer.blender.org/T65872

aaah I see now! I went to the options menu in 2.81 and its exactly how you said. "X Mirror under options" I tried following that sentence and now I am able to paint the weights symmetrically without issues.
Kinda weird that I couldn't find any information about this change in the changelogs.
