Hair particles not showing in 3D viewport except for particle edit mode

Operating system: Mac OSX 10.11.6 (15G22010)
Graphics card: AMD Radeon R9 M395

Blender Version
Broken: latest official release 2.82a and Blender 2.83 Alpha January 18, 00:24:22 - 1f92e9903fb7
Worked: (optional)

Short description of error
Hair particles are not showing in 3D viewport with the exception of the particle edit mode. They can be turned into a mesh, so I assume they are there but are simply not showing.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Open Blender
  2. Select default cube
  3. Open particle system, choose hair.

When enabling Children, something like this happens:

Thanks for the report. Blender 2.8X requires macOS: version 10.12 or newer with supported hardware. The graphics drivers are too buggy in earlier versions. Please upgrade to the latest driver by upgrading to your macOS to 10.12 or higher, see here for more information: https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/dev/troubleshooting/gpu/index.html
