Grid-lines vanish in perspective view, when viewed from the side #73732

Blender Version
Broken: 2.81
Worked: 2.79

When the camera is horizontal (keypad 1 or 3), axis and grid lines appear. When the camera rotates around the z axis (keypad 4 or 6), all grid lines disappear. In blender 2.79 and previous versions, the 0xy grid would still be visible. In the overlay dropdown menu, the grid checkbox is greyed out and selecting/deselecting does not fix the issue.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Enter blender 3D view (main default)
  • Press keypad 1
  • Press keypad 4

Can you please post a picture or a video of what you're talking about?
The grids are only shown in the orthographic side views. Even in 2.79.

Did you try factory resetting? And does this also happen in the latest build from https://builder.blender.org ?
What is your graphics card and do you have the latest driver for it?

This was a fresh install using the latest build. Graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 with up to date drivers.

The grid is now draw as an infinite plane. But viewed from side view the plane is infinitely small. This is a drawback of the technique.

This doesn't seem to be a drawing issue. The view does not toggle into orthographic mode like it's supposed to by default.

@cclar202 do you have {nav Preferences > Navigation > Orbit & Pan > Auto Perspective} disabled?

It happens on default settings, so Auto perspective is checked.
(going over "needs info" reports)

By default, 'Auto Perspective' is enabled. Unchecking auto perspective appears to have no effect on this issue.

Marking as a TODO since @fclem mentions this is limitation of current method.

Like said before, I don't think this is a drawing issue. In the video you can see that the view is still in perspective mode after switching to side view. It's totally expected to not have the grid show up here, it doesn't show up in 2.7 either. The actual question for me is, why is the view still in perspective mode after switching to the side view?

What I mean is that Auto Perspective needs to be enabled, so that the view is automatically set to orthographic and the grid shows up when switching to the side view.
So my question is, does it work as you'd expect with the option enabled?

So far no comment mentions that the default settings were tested (only a fresh install, which may still use custom preferences from another build).

The issue, as reported lands the view in perspective mode, and in this case the X/Y axis aren't visible.

This file for example, has XYZ axes enabled, but only the Z axis is visible.

I think this is what the report is about.

The report seems ambiguous regarding that, you can interpret it both ways. So we need to know which part is meant exactly.

Note that we differentiate between Grid and Floor: The Grid is what you see in orthographic view, the Floor is only visible in perspective view (the thing that fades out in the distance).

I mean the floor then. Though the floor is visible in both Orthographic and perspective (pre 2.8 and 2.8+), though now the floor stretches to infinity as you scroll out instead of being a fixed square plane, which is another issue, but not for this thread.

After re-reading over this thread again from the start and using the tools a little more, the issue appears to be...:

  • In both Orthographic and Perspective views, the floor disappears when viewed from a flat horizontal view.
  • The default setting have been changed, so auto perspective is turned off.
  • An easy way to achieve this issue is by going into Orthographic view, selecting NUMpad 1 or Y axis icon to enter 'Front' view.
  • Press NUMpad 4 or 6 to rotate the camera clockwise/anti clockwise.

The same effect can be achieved by carefully middle mouse scrolling the view to be horizontal with the floor, which fades into nothingness when a flat perspective is reached.

In versions before 2.8, the floor would remain visible, and allow users to see where 0 values for X,Y axis were.

I will close as this is by design.
We fade the grid when the camera gets close to the floor plane.
When in orthographic mode, the grid is render in the background so it does not gets in the way of the model. If we would to display something when the view is parallel to the floor plane, we get a visual discontinuity when moving the camera slightly. And we cannot remove the fading since it would clutter the main view quite a bit.

Please don't close this, as it's not invalid. there was basic functionality, which was the ability to see an axis in ortho view an when rotating the camera, which existed before 2.8 and then went away. "Fading" shouldn't play into it, nor should what the developers, who may or may not use the tool in a professional capacity, idea of what "clutter" is. If functionality is decided to no longer be core, it should be hidden with the option to turn back on (or better yet, left the same with option to turn off), not removed entirely.
