System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.18362-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: Radeon RX Vega ATI Technologies Inc. 4.5.13587 Core Profile Context 20.2.2 26.20.15019.15019

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.82 (sub 7), branch: master, commit date: 2020-02-12 16:20, hash: 77d23b0bd7 & 2.83 (sub 5), branch: master, commit date: 2020-03-01 21:35, hash: eaf0528749
Worked: -

Short description of error
I have a rigid body collision setup with various chained constraints - if I add a particle system to any of the active rigid body objects, the simulation ceases to run.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Blender file attached. Try adding a particle system to the 'Brick to test particle system' object in the main collection (or any other active object, the specified one simply for convenience).

The simulation will not run. Remove the particle system, the simulation runs again.

I would like to add particles emitting from the objects to simulate debris/dust but hit this issue and can't find any workaround.

Any insight much appreciated!

This is one odd feature/ bug. When added particle system to any of those rigid body objects, the animated object stops animating at the unlocked location/ rotation keyframe. Also, the rigid body physic stops working. Tested on Windows 8.1 with Intel graphic.

Broken on:
blender-2.80-windows64
blender-2.81-windows64
blender-2.81a-windows64
blender-2.82-windows64

There is a workaround though. If you parent a none rigid body object to the animated rigid body object, you can attach particle system to that none rigid body object.

Hi Davis,

Thanks for the workaround and updated file!

However as I have nearly 100 rigid body objects I'd like to add particles to (in this case the bricks) - duplicating and individually parenting each one to its rigid body equivalent seems super labour intensive... unless there is a way to parent multiple children to different objects in one go? But so far I've drawn a blank on this.

I have discovered that if you add the particles system to the rigid body object at the end of the simulation then SOMETIMES it will work - although sometimes it freezes everything as in my report above. I haven't worked out what determines the outcome, seems quite random to me.

But when it does work my god it is slow. Adding each particle system locks up my computer for 4-5 minutes, and only sometimes returns control, and often shows only 5% cpu use for that duration. Plus if I go to render I have to sit and wait while it calculates all 8000 dependency cycles! Even opening the file takes about 5 minutes, and changing frame is also crazy slow.

Is it a known bug in blender? Fixable or will it have to wait for the particle system overhaul?

I just tested this in 2.90.1 and adding particles to the bricks works properly. No crashes. Even if adding particle system to multiple active objects.
But I added a particle system to the cannonball and it stopped the animation.
