System Information
Operating system: Windows-7-6.1.7601-SP1 64 Bits
Graphics card: AMD Radeon HD 5700 Series ATI Technologies Inc. 4.5.13417 Core Profile Context 15.301.1901.0

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.83 (sub 5), branch: master, commit date: 2020-03-02 23:59, hash: fe7c4fb4a2

Short description of error
If you draw with Stroke Placement set to Surface, Blender interprets objects such as lamps and empties as surfaces and projects the stroke onto them.
This might be a feature rather than a bug. Maybe just "unexpected behaviour"?

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Create a new "2D animation" Blender file.
  2. Create a mesh (A) to project your strokes onto, like a plane for example.
  3. Create a lamp object or an empty (B), and place it in front of A, closer to your viewpoint in space than A.
  4. Select the GP object and go into draw mode.
  5. Set "Stroke Placement" to "Surface". (You can add an offset of 0.1 for easier visibility.)
  6. Draw over A, crossing over B here and there.
  7. Rotate your viewpoint. The stroke you've drawn should be projected onto A, with a few points projected onto B where they crossed over it.

I can confirm that, but don't know if this is a bug. @antoniov, what's your opinion?

This is an unexpected behaviour, but not sure we can consider it as a bug. I think now we can set as Know Issue.

As well I am having this issue when I move the camera to a top down view. While drawing in the camera view all points of a stroke stick to the camera origin.

This happens even if I set the draw location to 3D cursor and set the 3D cursor at the world origin well below the camera. And if I set the draw location to the grease pencil objects origin.

What I believe is another variation of this issue - first witnessed in 2.93 (but also present in 2.92, 2.91).

When GP Drawing on surface in Camera View and mouse exits Camera frame - the stroke either jumps to camera location or stretches to it (depending on location of first point of stroke).

As suggested in #77061. Works OK without camera overlay on.

@SimplSam Yes, you are right, it is the same issue.

I have been delving into blender for a little over a year now and am finding the grease pencil a really powerful tool. However, I have also encountered this problem that I would like to point out to the developers. It is not very nice while working "around the model" 😊
You can work around it by deselecting the overlays, but it is not a straightforward process, especially for new users, it would be interesting to have something that works like traditional snaps.
Thanks in advance for your attention 🙏
