System Information
Operating system: Linux-5.3.0-45-generic-x86_64-with-debian-buster-sid 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 1660 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 435.21

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.83 (sub 11), branch: master, commit date: 2020-04-04 16:55, hash: 505a19ed75
Worked: with a version I compiled a few days ago

Update:
Bisecting the issue gave me:
82a8da0ec3 is the first bad commit.

Short description of error
When rendering with Cycles and Adaptive Sampling turned on the resulting image has artifacts.
Rendering on GPU (and CPU) looks like this:
cycles_adaptive_sampliing_gpu_cpu.png
Rendering on CPU looks like this (please take a look at the full image because in the preview the artifacts are not shown):
cycles_adaptive_sampliing_cpu.png

It's a little bit late here so I'm not able to make a bisect, but it worked with a version a few days ago :/

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Open Blender and click on General on the Splash Screen
  2. Change the render engine to Cycles
  3. Turn on Adaptive Sampling
  4. Press F12 to render

Stay cool, have fun^^

I can confirm the artifacts when rendering with the CPU.

@lichtwerk Mist, war wohl schon zu spät.
Hätte ich mir das Bisecting auch sparen können -.-
