Freezes/hangs while using videos as textures #76280

OS: Windows 10
GPU: gtx 1070
Blender version: 2.82a

I'm noticing great application-wide hangs when videos are used as textures of 3d objects using "Image texture" nodes in the Shader editor. It only takes as few as five 1080p60 textured planes to make the "material preview" and the "rendered" viewport shading modes unusable due to multi-second freezes whenever anything is done that even remotely concerns these particular objects such as seeking and scrubbing in the timeline or editing keyframes. Even one video texture is enough to make scrubbing stutter beyond usability. In addition, there is an initial 5 seconds freeze when hitting F12 to render a single frame. I'm using Eevee renderer and sRGB color space.

When the freezes happen, the task manager shows that blender uses 25% of the cpu, meaning that it is maxing out only one of the four available cores, even tho not even using all of them would make the situation much better. GPU stays unused throughout the freeze and the ssd is only lightly used by blender.

Open the provided .blend file, update the shader node on the left with the attached example video, set the "Frames" field to 9999 and click around the timeline.

I'm not a blender developer, but I might be able to help.

  • Since you have a NVidia graphics card, it definitely should be in use for this, because EEVEE is based in good ole' OpenGL. I'm not sure this is Blender's fault however, and would check your system configuration. Particularly if one installed Windows 10 over a different OS (such as an earlier Windows).

  • Five HD video panes sounds like alot, even for NVidia (though I'm no expert there). Maybe I'm misinterpreting what you said, though. To test if this is Blender or your system, maybe you can try playing the videos at once in 5 copies of an external lightweight video player (I do not recommend Windows 10 "Movies & TV", try VLC Media Player).

The low playback performance is comparatively a minor issue so i decided to remove it from the task. Maybe i'll open another task instead.

Please add a simple file with steps to get the freeze. I suppose one video can be copied to get the required 5 ?

Turned out one video was enough to get severe stuttering in the timeline. Duplicating the file and creating that many objects each with its own unique material does indeed make the situation worse. I was not however able to reproduce the F12 freeze in this test for now.

While Blender can be optimized more to improve this, such optimizations are outside of scope of the bug tracker.

Reading a random frame from a video file is slow in general (and depends on the specific encoding). For acceptable performance image sequences have to be used for now.
