Short description of error
If geometry has the Bevel Modifier applied and the Realtime Display is on, the UV islands do no display in the Image Editor.
If you turn off the Realtime display (Display in Viewport) and then adjust the view in the Image Editor, the UV Islands will appear.
If you turn On the Realtime display and then adjust the view in the Image Editor, the UV Islands will vanish.
You can still paint in the Texture paint on the geometry and it will appear in the Image Editor.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Create a Cube
Assign a Bevel Modifier - turn Realtime display ON (for me it is on by default)
Set interface to Texture Paint mode.
There will by no UV Islands displayed in the Image editor

In layout, turn off realtime update, go to texture paint, turn on realtime update & it appears.

I think the uv display is based on geometry being tagged selected?

Havent checked in depth, but seems like usage of BKE_mesh_from_bmesh_for_eval_nomain in modifiers has an influence on this

I am not able to find 'Realtime Update' the reference in the code to this string is related to animation system or sequencer. Can someone clarify?

Sorry I missed the message. Just checked the docs, realtime updates is indeed animation and graph editor related.
What I was talking about is the "Realtime" icon in modifiers.
