System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.17763-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: Radeon (TM) Pro WX 4150 Graphics ATI Technologies Inc. 4.5.13572 Core Profile Context FireGL 19.Q4.1 26.20.13032.13

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.83 (sub 15), branch: master, commit date: 2020-05-06 16:18, hash: 9605c26166
Worked: Never (2.8+)

Short description of error
Can not connect nodes if Blender has 2 windows with node editor open on 2 monitors with mismatching resolution

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Bug should be reproducible on following setup:
Primary monitor: FHD, 100% scaling, child window, nodes working OK
Secondary monitor: 4K 150% scaling, main window, can't connect nodes here.

  • Use default startup.
  • Add new window from the top bar menu
  • in each window open shader editor.
  • Try to connect nodes in both editors.

I can't reproduce this problem.

Please attach an example .blend file saved with two windows and node editors open where it's not possible to connect nodes.

I am also unable to reproduce this issue.
I also worked on a few projects a couple months ago that required me to have multiple node editors open in multiple windows on multiple monitors and I never had this issue. Although, that may of been down to me using Blender 2.82a or 2.81.

In above file, started mainwindows 3dview+nodes side by side.
Duplicated screen (didnt happen then),
Then turned the seccond monitor (not main) nodes into 3dview
Then i vertically split left side of the (not main) and turned the upper in nodes view.
Then i couldnt connect nodes in the main windows

I tested with your file. Tried creating many more windows, splitting 3D views and turning them into node editors, etc. Still unable to reproduce.

I'm using Blender 2.83 eaee2b4119 (2020-05-10 06:26) on Linux with a GTX 1050ti. I don't know if using Linux or a Nvidia GPU changes anything (it probably won't), but it's something to keep in mind.

I tested it with blender 2.9 as well still the same problem in that file.
So you were able to connect or alter the node setup in both node views, i'm not.

Do you use 2 monitors? Are they same brand / resolution / DPI scaling?

Can you cause this error when both windows are in same monitor?

I was able to connect and alter the nodes in both views.
Have you tried loading factory defaults then attempting to recreate the issue? Select from the top of Blender "File>Defaults>Load factory settings" then attempt to recreate the issue from there.
I doubt it will work, but it's worth trying.

I checked quickly if resolution matters here (of course after I requested this info...) and I can cause this issue.

My setup was:

Primary monitor: FHD, 100% scaling, child window, nodes working OK
Secondary monitor: 4K 150% scaling, main window, can't connect nodes here.

Though I have a feeling I have seen this issue reported, but I can not find this report.

Ok i can confirm its combined problem with windows monitor scaling,
Windows uses a recomended scale here ( note that I also wear glasses, my eyesight isnt perfect anymore ) so If i disable it, it becomes too small for my eyes.
I have to set my laptop on 125% and a philips monitor on 100%, and those seam the default for both.

Looks like the same as #74355 (Selecting (or connecting) nodes in Compositor is malfunctioning when when monitors have different dpi)...
