System Information
Operating system: Linux-5.6.14-arch1-1-x86_64-with-arch 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 970/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 440.82

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.90.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2020-05-30 21:11, hash: ba711824b3

Short description of error
Making selected hidden objects visible in the outliner doesn't make them selected in the 3D viewport.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Select the default cube (from outliner or 3D viewport, doesn't matter)
  • In outliner, click the eye icon twice to hide and unhide it
  • See that the cube is not selected anymore

Yes, I can confirm this on Windows 10. There seems to be some incorrect mapping if one uses the shortcuts (H and Alt H to hide and unhide) the object(s) remains in selected state but using the 'eye' to hide and then unhide, the object gets deselected.

This is by design; hidden objects cannot be selected. The alt+h operator (object.hide_view_clear) actually selects all the objects that it unhides. The hide operator (object.hide_view_set) also deselects the objects as it hides them. Hiding from the outliner also deselects the objects to match this behavior.

@Zachman so do you mean to say Alt + H (unhide) and turning on the "eye" (unhide) on the Outliner works differently, is this by design?

Alt+H -> selects the object it unhides
Unhide from Outliner -> doesn't select the object it unhide

Just clarifying, because it is not clear.

I encountered this while exporting FBX files with "Selected Objects" option turned on, since it needs objects to be visible and selected. I didn't pay attention to the viewport at all, so I just selected my objects and then marked them as visible. I realized that I have to mark everything visible and then select the objects I need for the export.

I understand the behavior now though, it's just really confusing that outliner's selections do not match with the actual selections.

@Calra yes the viewport and outliner unhide are different by design because they do different things. Viewport (alt+H) unhides all hidden objects and then selects them. Outliner unhide (eye toggle), only unhides one object at a time, so I think it would be annoying if it constantly changed the selection each time you unhide a single object.

@Sponji that is a known issue, but not exactly the same as reported here.
