Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.83.0, branch: master, commit date: 2020-06-03 14:38, hash:

Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)
Short description of error
Simple deform shows wrong behaviour on a plane.
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

Not a bug, not simple deform problem.
Same as #61523 (Simple deform (Bend) modifier acts wrong 2.8 13.08.2019)
But yes, the lack of bending around X to Z, around Y to Z and around Z to X
Is there obstacles to add such options to list?
Exist:
Proposed to add
And new tips at least: «Bends around local Z axis towards Y» instead «Deforms around local Z»
«Bends around local Y axis towards X»,
«Bends around local X axis towards Y»
NotSoSimple defor confusing users too much.
Why did you stopped with 3 variants of bend, when it is 6 possible?

Away from my computer at the moment so I can’t check, but I would bet that the precision issue mesh has some vertices with ‘-0’ as one of the axis locations.
@EAW no need to check. This precision imperfection caused by mesh rotation in edit mode. And modifier work as intended.

I would agree with this / linked “bug”. The bend in Blender does not make sense to me either. The user should be able to choose axis to bend around , either global or local axis. Not have to rotate the object in order to get bend to work properly. It’s very confusing for new users imo. Even after using blender for quite some time, I’m still not sure what I need to do often, to get it to work as expected.
Agree. This modifier is one of most confusing and even skilled users prefer to avoid to use it, just because it requires additional empty and rotation to bend freely.
