2.83 3D viewport performance #77688

System Information
Operating system: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
Graphics card: Mesa DRI Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600 (HSW GT2), version: 4.5 (Core Profile) Mesa 20.0.4
system-info.txt

Blender Version
Broken: 2.83
Working: 2.82

Short description of error
Problem seen in Workbench, Wireframe and Eevee.
Viewport performance it's really bad, I'm moving around just the initial cube scene at 15-20 Fps, older Blender versions movement is perfectly smooth.
No matter the scene/blend file, 2.83 offers worse viewport movement performance compared to older versions,
It's important to mention that only the viewport movement is being affected by this performance drop, everything else including rendering works smooth as butter just like older versions or even better. Splitting up the scene in windows kinda fixes this problem.

This report is rather vague. Do you have a specific blend file that is consistently slower in 2.83 than 2.82 and earlier? If so, post it here. Thanks.

This problem can be due a of bad installation or error when locating the dependencies.
Try to uninstall and delete all files related to the Blender installer. Then download and install again.

If the problem persists, try to run blender_debug-gpu.cmd that is included in the download.
After Blender closes, the logs will be in a text file which can be attached here.

Already tried to reinstall Blender several times and with several versions, the only one that gives me this behaviour is 2.83...
Sadly I cant find the blender_debug-gpu.cmd, although when I run Blender through the terminal I get these errors messages, dunno if they're normal:

AL lib: (EE) GetLoadedHrtf: Invalid header in /usr/share/openal/hrtf/default-44100.mhr: "MinPHR02"

found bundled python: /snap/blender/39/2.83/python

Thank you for your help.

Wherever I open any scene/blend file in 2.83 the viewport movement performance drops instantly, switching to older versions solves the problem, therefore I don't have any specific scene with this problem in particular. I think it's also important to refer that only the 3d viewport seems to be affected by this performance problem, everything else works perfectly fine or even better, including rendering.

Are you able to try downloading the zip version of Blender from http://blender.org/download and give that a try. There's been some weird things with the snap package and running this test will eliminate this issue.

Are you also able to test with 2.90.0 from here http://builder.blender.org/

I tried installing from the snap store/terminal and gave a try to the zip version, none of them seems to make a difference. Just tested Blender 2.9 Alpha now, and the issue seems to persist.

older Blender versions movement is perfectly smooth.

So for Blender 2.82 the performance is fine?

> older Blender versions movement is perfectly smooth. So for Blender 2.82 the performance is fine?

@DrakkWyr, in the description you reported two GPUs: Radeon HD 8790M and Intel® HD Graphics 4600.
But for the OpenGL drawing of the viewport, blender uses only one GPU.

Can you provide the system-info.txt generated with Help -> Save System Info?
There we can see which GPU blender is using.

I decided to get system info from Blender 2.83 and 2.82 so it might be easier to spot something different

While this problem is not fixed, you can use the Dedicated Radeon HD 8790M for blender.
It can be even more efficient.
Usually the GPU that an application uses is set in the computer "Power Settings".

Still missing important information in the description.
Is the performance drop seen in any view mode? (Workbench, Wireframe, Eevee)

Workbench, Wireframe and Eevee are all affected by this issue. (sorry for the lack of information, it's my 1st time doing this and I'm not sure what to provide)

I'm not sure if this setting was active when I was using older Blender versions but deactivating anti-aliasing for the viewport in the preferences seemed to solve the problem overall.

@DrakkWyr I am looking at older reports, is this still an issue? Or have anything changed?

Hi guys
I had the same problem, sluggish viewport.
After fighting with settings all day, it was Quixel mixer.
As soon as I closed it, viewport in blender went back to normal.
