outliner visibility not binded to bpy.context.object.hide_viewport #77844

System Information
Operating system: Linux-5.7.2-zen1-1-zen-x86_64-with-glibc2.29 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 1080/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 440.82

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.83.0, branch: makepkg (modified), commit date: 2020-06-03 14:38, hash: 211b6c29f7
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
outliner visibility not binded to bpy.context.object.hide_viewport

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
clicking the "eye" icon of an object in the Outliner shows "bpy.context.object.hide_viewport = True" in the info panel.
But in PythonTerminal the output is:

bpy.context.object.hide_viewport

False

Also not possible to make it visible again with bpy.context.object.hide_viewport = False.
Seems like bpy.context.object.hide_viewport is not connected to the Outliner icon at all.

API wise you can use object.hide_set and object.hide_viewport

https://docs.blender.org/api/master/bpy.types.Object.html?#bpy.types.Object.Object.hide_set

I am a bit confused about how this is logged/presented in the UI, will check on this...

bpy.context.object.hide_viewport corresponds to Object Properties > Visibility > Show in > Viewports not to "eye" icon in outliner.

`bpy.context.object.hide_viewport` corresponds to `Object Properties > Visibility > Show in > Viewports` not to "eye" icon in outliner.

But:

  • setting hide_viewport from python will also toggle the "Monitor" icon in the Outliner.
  • using both "Eye" and "Monitor" icons in the Outliner will log object.hide_viewport
  • tooltips for both "Eye" and "Monitor" icons in the Outliner will show object.hide_viewport

I'd say there is at least something very unexpected going on that needs clarification.
@iss: do you know more? [will also check code now...]

Hmm that sounds off indeed. I triaged this report in very narrow scope.

Submitted [D10028: Fix #77844: Expose 'ViewLayer.object_bases' to RNA/Python API](https://archive.blender.org/developer/D10028) to resolve this bug.

This report is fairly old, current tooltips for the 'eye' icon do not reference object at all.

So I think further discussion regarding whether we should expose this to python or not is somewhat out of scope from a bug report? Afaict current code behave as expected here...

While the code is functioning as intended.

The reported RNA-data path is still invalid in 2.93/master, toggling visibility shows this in the info space:
bpy.context.scene.hide_viewport = False
