System Information
Operating system: Windows 10
Graphics card: gtx 1060 6gb

Blender Version
Broken: 2.83.0

Short description of error Textures are black and white in Material and Rendered Preview using Eevee. And textures are white in Material Preview using Cycles.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
I just run .blend file on Factory Settings using Eevee first. Checked Material and Rendered Preview on Layout or Shading Workspace. Then switched to Cycles.

This corrected the problem on my system:

  • Started Blender 2.83.0
  • Loaded file
  • Select mesh 'ground'
  • Changed viewport display to 'rendered'
  • Toggled** 'material properties'**
  • Selected mesh** 'Foliage001_2K_Color'**
  • Re-selected mesh 'ground'At this point the viewport displayed mesh'ground' in color as expected instead of white.
Scene then rendered as expected (to match viewport).
I have no idea why this works, but it does.
This problem does not happen in blender-2.90.0-fd8d245e6a80-windows64

This has to do with the number of instances.
Reducing the number to something ~650 will fix it directly on file load.

Can also confirm this does not happen in 2.90 (1d6529873f)

We had the same reported in #71552 (Material view and Eevee Rendered View display glitch when scene contains hair particle systems with high amount of instances) which was merged into #74302 (EEVEE scene with many instances opens with huge white glare, or black materials).

So I guess this is a duplicate of #74302?

@Jeroen-Bakker: sorry to ask again, but regarding LTS: are all reports that are resolved in mater to be closed? https://wiki.blender.org/wiki/Process/LTS/Addenda#Open_Issues seems to suggest to do so?
@fclem: I could not reproduce #74302, can you confirm this is resolved now?

#74302 seems to be resolved in 2.90 as well, so remaining question is just if this in any way interesting for LTS?
If not, this can be closed...

This is likely to have been fixed by the eevee material refactor. Which is not to be backported to 2.83 since the changes are too big.
