Short description of error
Opening Material Properties Tab crashes Blender

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Program crashes as soon Material Properties tab is opened or by clicking on browse material in Shader Editor.

Happens in any fresh install of 2.90 alpha with default cube.

My guess is there's something to do with material preview. If these steps described above are avoided, shaders load in Eevee or Cycles just fine and no issues in editing material nodes.

Event Timeline

I couldn't reproduce this (different OS and graphics though). Does this happen with the render engine set to workbench?

Workbench works fine, which could be an indicator that it's actually material preview conflicting with something.

I recorded a small video showing that the material preview is pitch black when I open the Material tab, meanwhile blender freezes for a few seconds before the CTD

We have a couple of reports with Matrial Preview issues, see T77944: Material Preview (and final render in EEVEE) purple, T78205: Material preview with eevee render engine shows pink color regardless of material settings.
Intel GPU (HD Graphics 630/620) seems to be a common ground here.

What is the output if you launch blender using the debug and debug_gpu batch files?

Yeah I also had those pink colors issue after loading shaders. I did not report back then because it had stopped being a problem after some builds one or two weeks ago. When I had it, I could solve it by moving shader parameters values around, especially SSS.
