System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.18362-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: Quadro M2000/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 451.48

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.90.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2020-07-20 20:08, hash: 731d9f0bfa
Worked: I think it never worked

Short description of error
Optix viewport denoiser error on Quadro M2000

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Create simple scene (plane and cube)
  2. Set viewport denoising to Optix (or leave automatic)
  3. Change viewport to Rendered mode
  4. Wait for 2-3 samples, denoising process starts working
  5. After 2-4 seconds error appears (screentshot 1): CUDA_ERROR_LAUNCH_FAILED in cuStreamSynchronize(0) (device_optix.cpp:1021)
  6. Back to Solid mode
  7. Back to Rendered mode
  8. Rendering not starts at all, another error appears: Failed to create CUDA context (Launch failed)

I get this error with:

  1. CUDA device enabled or disabled in settings
  2. If CUDA enabled - render device is CPU or GPU in Render properties

Error disappears if Optix viewport denoise disabled or Open Image Denoise selected. Switching back to Optix gives same errors.

Thanks for the report.

This is almost always caused by driver problems. Please double-check if the drivers are up to date.

In the troubleshooting there is a section about error messages in NVidia GPUs.
Check if any of this information can help solve the problem:

Can you please confirm that updating the drivers solves the problem?

Can you please confirm that updating the drivers solves the problem?

I've updated driver to version 451.77 (newest available, previous was 451.48). Problem not solved.

@ponomarovmax, the images show different errors, please avoid mixing different errors in a single report since one bug per report is allowed.

@pmoursnv, can you shed some light here?

  • Quadro M2000/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 451.48
Likely a system/driver issue with this particular card. It would be useful to try another application using OptiX and/or its denoiser to see if similar issues occur.
  • GeForce GTX 1070 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 432.00
Driver r432 is way too old, OptiX is only supported starting with r440.
  • Quadro K620/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 442.19
~Maxwell 1.0 is not supported for OptiX (which the chip used on the K620 card is from), only Maxwell 2.0 is. It shouldn't show up as being available on those cards though, so will push a fix shortly that makes it unavailable in the first place.~ This is fixed now.

@ponomarovmax I am looking at older reports, is this still an issue? Or have anything changed?

I do not and will not have access to this equipment, so I cannot confirm is this bug relevant.

Thanks for update. As have been mentioned, this is likely driver issue, so I will close this report. Thanks for repoting anyway.
