Geometry is completely broken and unusable in Viewport #79228

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.20175-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 960/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 451.48

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.91.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2020-07-23 22:35, hash: 698af2e774
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
I opened a file i created almost a year ago. The geometry appears to be completely broken, and displays heavy artifacts. Changing the editing mode does not affect this. The model is still rendered correctly in Cycles.

When opening the original file, the issue appears on about two thirds of the time. When saving the file in the broken state, it appears to stay consistently.

Even after reloading all factory settings, this still happens.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Opened a .blend file.

I can confirm that sometimes it's broken but not every time.

To reproduce it I quickly opened the file multiple times. It often just crashes, but sometimes produces this artefact. I recorded similar problem in 2.90 (second video) .

I've also had this kind of problem a few times here on Linux with Blender from Master (GTX 960). I have not had time to investigate when exactly this occurs. When this happens I simply close blender and then open Blender again.

I saw this too after installing the latest built on July 24. After a system reboot, it was fine.

I just tested it again with the most recent build, and it became even worse. Blender now instantly crashes after starting up, sometimes you can still see the broken mesh before it shuts down.

With yesterday's Windows build from the 2.90 Beta, everything seems fine now, but i'll test this file again from time to time to make sure this isn't an accident.

I tested:

2.90.0 Beta, branch: master, commit date: 2020-07-30 17:19, hash: `rBf45f8a7a8985`
  • I reverted to factory settings and factory preferences. I still get occasional errors and crashes when i reopen file and reopen Blender.
  • However, if the file loads correctly, reverting/reloading the file without restarting Blender will not cause crash or glitches.
  • What's also interesting, If there's one instance of Blender open, I cannot reproduce errors in second instance.

Thx @MarcinTwarowski keeping an eye on the duplicate reports.
Since #77910 (Sometimes the Viewport is damaged.) is the oldest (and @fclem is already involved), lets keep this as the central place to investigate this further (so will merge these reports)
