Insight into all too common "Blender crashes on startup" issue (WIN32) #80147

As a new user of Blender, I have struggled with the common "Blender crashes on startup" issue...to the point of giving up on the application. After having it running in various forms off and on for a few months...long enough to get hooked on it...I recently reached a state where none of the versions would startup. I'd receive the dreaded "black screen" crash with no message, on all four machines that Blender refused to start on.

The insight: I just discovered that, on a w10 v2004 box that would not start Blender; if I right click the Blender desktop icon and choose "run as administrator", Blender starts normally. It will not start without selecting that option. Fyi, I hold administrator status on this machine already, so it is not clear to me why this is happening.

It may be possible that a permissions glitch in the launch process is preventing startup. This may be the source of the following log error reported by other users: Error : EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION

I hope that helps...now I'm off to Blender. Thanks for the support.

Thank you for your report. Unfortunately we need more information to investigate this issue. Please download Blender 2.90 from here , open Blender's installation directory and double click on the blender_debug_gpu.cmd. This will start Blender in debug mode and create log files. Try to make Blender crash again. Once it crashes the Windows Explorer should open and show you two files. Add them to your bug report by clicking on the upload button as shown in the screenshot below. Please also upload the crash log located in C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Local\Temp\blender.crash.txt.

Blender 2.90 is needed because it creates a stack trace in the blender.crash.txt that hopefully allows us to identify the issue.
