System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19041-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 451.67

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.90.0, branch: master, commit date: 2020-08-31 11:26, hash: 0330d1af29
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
Selecting linked vertices/faces does not work consistently. Must use shortcut key multiple times to actually select linked geometry or selection is delayed by several seconds. Additionally, selecting linked geometry occasionally selects objects it was duplicated from or an item duplicated from it.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Start blender.
Select starting cube
Enter edit mode
Select all
Duplicate starting cube multiple times
Select vertex one of the cubes
Press L

I cannot reproduce this with either the latest stable or current development versions of Blender:

Please try the latest daily build: https://builder.blender.org/download/

  • Go to File → Defaults → Load Factory Settings and then load your file to see if you still can reproduce this issue.

If the problem persists, please give us more clear instructions on how to reproduce it from scratch.

Have reset to factory default settings, uninstalled and reinstalled blender, and even reset windows to a fresh install. Have been getting the same results with the 2.9 stable build and 2.91 daily build. Not getting a result from using the select linked hotkey has improved, but still have issues with select linked using geometry from other objects.

I can reproduce now after watching your video.
The extra step to see this for me is to hover the cursor over the other object and press L when the cursor is over the other object.
I was able to consistently reproduce from 2.80 to 2.91.

when I read this manual page: https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/2.90/modeling/meshes/selecting/linked.html#linked

With Pick Linked you can also select connected geometry directly under the cursor, using the L shortcut to select or Shift-L to deselect linked. This works differently in that it uses the geometry under the cursor instead of the existing selection.

So, to my knowledge, this is not a bug. The selection is guided by the mouse cursor.
But I'll let someone confirm if my understanding is correct.

Okay, I definitely just misunderstood how the tool worked then. Thank you and I apologize for the wasted time!

I edited my comment above to link to the correct manual page, here we are talking about meshes and not surfaces.
But the conclusion is the same, this is not a bug.
