bpy.data.objects['XXX'].vertex_groups.new(name = 'Test')
Closed, ResolvedPublicTO DO

Description

System Information
Operating system: Windows-7-6.1.7601-SP1 64 Bits
Graphics card: Quadro K2000/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 385.69

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.83.4, branch: master, commit date: 2020-08-05 06:00, hash: rBc113af82881a
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error

bpy.data.objects['XXX'].vertex_groups.new(name = 'Test')
returns 'NoneType'

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

start Blender -> delete Cube -> add Curve -> Path

go scripting

D.objects['NurbsPath'].vertex_groups.new(name = 'Test')
A = D.objects['NurbsPath'].vertex_groups.new(name = 'Test')
type(A)
class 'NoneType'>

even if this is the expected behavior -- throwing an exception would be nice

I think what is usually done is report this via the report system, and yes, think we should do this.
