Certain parts of a mesh parented to an armature in edit mode cannot be edited at all. #81403

System Information
Operating system: Windows 64
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080

Blender Version
Broken: 2.901
Worked: N/A

On certain parts of the mesh, I am not able to select vertices (they do not show up at all). On said parts, I am also (sometimes) unable to edit them at all in edit mode; I am unable to move, rotate, or scale them - nothing works, even if I change from vertex select to edge or face select. Doing functions like merge or collapse when the whole uneditable part is selected will reveal a second, unselectable copy within the whole mesh. The only recourse I have had is to delete the part of the mesh that isn't editable, but that costs me valuable weight painting. The worst part is that sometimes, it surfaces in other meshes that I have not edited.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
There seems to be multiple ways to cause this error, which are listed below. The only commonality is that it all involves meshes that have been parented to an armature and trying to do edits after it has been parented, either in edit mode or weight paint mode.

Method 1

  • Export an FBX from Makehuman and import it into a file (in the bug report, File 4).
  • Delete all but the pelvis on the imported FBX and merge it onto the human mesh (which has been already rigged to the armature using automatic weights).
  • Cut off the original pelvis from the human mesh and connect it to the imported pelvis using the merge tool.
  • Reparent the mesh to the armature using automatic weights.
  • Attempt to edit the weight paints.
  • At some point, the mesh becomes uneditable in edit mode.

Method 2

  • Have a mesh parented to the armature.
  • Separate part of a mesh and then reparent the separated part to the armature using automatic weights.
  • Join the mesh back to the original mesh.
  • Select all and then merge by distance to connect the meshes.
  • Attempt to select the formerly separated part; it cannot be edited at all in edit mode.

Method 3

  • Have a mesh parented to an armature.
  • In weight paint mode, hide a part of the mesh.
  • Return to edit mode.
  • Go back to weight paint mode.
  • Unhide.
  • Repeat the process until at some point, the part that keeps getting hidden can no longer be edited in edit mode.

Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible).
File 1 (the uneditable section is the legs; with only the vertices at the very ends being moveable):
BugReport.blend
File 2 (the uneditable section is the cape, with only the vertices at the top being editable):
BugReport2.blend
File 3 (a default template for testing):
HumanoidTemplate1.blend
File 4 (a MakeHuman FBX for testing):
m1.fbx

Note: In files 1 and 2, I have excised all but the uneditable parts because the model in which I am encountering this error in is for a private project. Also, I am sorry if I am not being clear here, but this is the first major bug I have had to report.

Also, sometimes exporting the uneditable part of the mesh and reimporting it back in does make it editable again, but this does not always work.

I think this might be fixed already by

Could you check if you can still repro from the steps provided in a fresh 2.91 build from https://builder.blender.org/download/ (because I cant)

Note: the usual workaround for these issues (prior to the said fixes) was to go to sculptmode and unhide all there (this brought back the ability to edit stuff in other modes)

Ok, by using alt-h on the mesh while in sculpt mode, it did restore the editability of the whole mesh.

Good to hear!

Remaining question: can you still reproduce these issue in a fresh build from https://builder.blender.org/download/ ? (because I cant)

@MochiSakura Does this issue still occur in a current daily build of Blender ?
