Setting the brush radius unit to "scene" does not automatically use correct stroke spacing distance #81841

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19041-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 456.38

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.91.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2020-10-18 20:27, hash: 48c484a22e

Short description of error
The brush settings have an option to fix the radius to either the view or scene, called "Radius Unit".
If the Scene setting is used, it will not automatically use the correct spacing distances for the stroke.
This needs to be toggled manually with separate stroke setting called "Spacing Distance" from view to scene.

If the viewport orientation is very close to the world origin, rotated towards an object that is further away from the world origin, it will lead to a much higher spacing distance.

Exact steps to reproduce

  • Move the default cube 4 units away from the world origin

  • Add a multires modifier and subdivide 5 times

  • Enter sculpt mode

  • Use the draw brush

  • Switch the Radius Unit setting from View to Scene

  • Orient your viewport so that you are positioned very close to the world origin, looking at the cube

  • Sculpt on the cube (Notice the very high spacing distance)

  • Rotate your view around to the other side of the cube (Now the viewport is positioned further away from the world origin)

  • Sculpt on the cube from that angle (The stroke distance should be much smaller now)

  • To fix the issue switch the stroke setting "Spacing Distance" from View to Scene

  • Retry sculpting from the same angles

I cannot reproduce this bug. Maybe it has been fixed or the steps are not that clear?

Oh, This is a bit confusing. I feel like there is some inconsistency still, did you try using your stylus pen to test the file I had uploaded ? I can share a screen record video on sculpt-paint-texture-module blenderchat channel. I am not 100 percent certainly sure, maybe this could be due to the way I created the file.

After checking and experimenting a bit more I found a possible cause of the issue, its due to some inconsistency in the projected falloff radius and strength of the brush which is also being taken into consideration with sphere falloff of the brush. I think it's a bug. I will share the video explaining it.

Ok I can finally reproduce the actual issue. I will update the title and description.

The issue has nothing to do with the multires eraser brush or brush strength.
It has to do with the "Scene" setting for the Radius Unit in the brush setting not being able to properly take the viewport position into account for the spacing distance.
The further you orient your camera to be at the world origin the stronger the effect will be.
One way to fix the behaviour is to switch the stroke setting "Space Distance" from View to Scene as well.

Perhaps this option should be forced onto the brush when the Scene Radius Unit is being used.
