unselectable cylinder #82284

Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
Still relearning, so apologies in advance if this is not really a bug...
Doesn't matter if I am in Edir or{F9143090} Object mode, but I CANNOT select the long cylinder in the attached file. The idea was to solidify it (and the rectangular solid on the left of the big cylinder and use the thin (ultimately solid) cylinder to bool the left-side rectangular solid (i.e. drill a hole in it). Why has that long cylinrer become unselectable and what can I do to change it?

While I'm communicating concerns... you probably already have something for this and I just haven't learned it yet, but it would be SO much more convenient if I could stretch an object and NOT have it get bigger on both sides of the origin. When I am trying to meet a surface of another object, I do not want the other side moving sway from what it was tangent to. With symmetric stretching/scaling, I have to scale, move, repeat until both sides finally fit. It would be much more efficient to just be able move one side tangent to whatever it should be tangent to and then stretch the other side to meet what it should be tangent to - two simple/intuitive operations, not an iterative process. Apologies if I am simply still ignorant of Blender's capabilities - the learning curve is daunting, expially with all of the possible add-ons. If there is a tutorial for that, please send me the URL, so I can get smarter.
