Illegal address in cuCtxSynchronize() - crashing on Cycles' Display Render Preview (CUDA) #82890

System Information
Operating system: Windows 10 Home, 64-bit
Graphics card: nVidia RTX 2080 + GTX 1060 8GB

Blender Version
Broken: (2.90.1 & 2.92.0 Alpha & 2.83.9)
Worked: (none worked)

Short description of error
Blender freezing/crashing when switching to "Display Render Preview" in viewport - using Cycles (rendering with CUDA GPUs).
It happens each and every time right now with all the above mentioned Blender versions. It never happened before with the exact same setup.

Additional info:

  • The main rendering process performs ok with no issues.
  • "Display Render Preview" done with only CPU works ok.
  • Live preview with Eeve works ok.

During the crash - the status text shows randomly one of these messages:

  • Updating Shaders
  • Updating Integrator
  • Updating Scene BVH
  • Loading render kernels (may take a few minutes the first time)
  • Illegal address in cuCtxSynchronize()

I tried launching Blender from cmd and the result from the log is in txt file attached.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Launch Blender
  2. Preferences: check all installed GPUs in System > CUDA tab.
  3. Switch to Cycles
  4. Set GPU rendering method (supported or experimental)
  5. Turn on "Display Render Preview"

Already tested solutions

  • Installing newest nVidia drivers
  • Uninstalling all nVidia drivers with DDU and performing a fresh installation (a few times)
  • Switching from "Game Ready" nVidia drivers to "Studio" drivers back and forth
  • reinstalling Blender
  • checking a few older Blender versions

Have you tried increasing the Timeout Detection Recovery (TDR) delay? If not please try to do so following the guide on this website .

Both values of TDR were already set to 60 (I did it a few months ago).
I also tried reverting back to some old nVidia drivers (released 2 months before: 452.06) a moment ago and it still didn't help so I updated to the newest ones again.
If you suspect that a total PC formatting might do - I can try to do it in a while. But if there are other options to check first - I'll vote for it.

@MichalMularczyk has anything changed in the meantime?

I finally decided to perform a full PC formatting.
Testing for a few days and everything looks ok.
No idea what could cause that previous behaviour, but this solution is worth noting in such cases.

@MichalMularczyk Good to hear that it's working for you now. I'll close the ticket then. If the issue occurs again, please create a new bug report.
