System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.17763-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 1080 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 457.30

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.92.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2020-12-16 23:32, hash: 3a1d1aaa86
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
vertex color display seems to be broken in object mode (solid mode display with the corresponding option selected). Vertex color are visible when painting but disappears when returning in object mode.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • in the 3d view - default scene - go to vertex paint mode
  • draw something
  • go to object mode
  • In the solid mode display selected the corresponding option
  • Now enable experimental Sculpt Vertex Colors in the preferences
    Vertex Paint disappear

I edited the description to match the submission template and guidelines.

But I cannot reproduce this with either the latest stable or current development versions of Blender:

Please try the latest daily build: https://builder.blender.org/download/

Go to File → Defaults → Load Factory Settings and then load your file to see if you still can reproduce this issue.

If the problem persists, please give us more clear instructions on how to reproduce it from scratch.

I just tested it and I find out that this bug only occurs when you have enabled the experimental Sculpt Vertex Colors in the preferences....
There is some conflict there....

I think we had a task for this already, but cannot find it atm, #78225 (Viewport vertex color mode: now it uses only sculpt vertex colors, even if datablock do not exist) is related though.

Hi, I confirm that enabling developer extra 'sculpt vertex color' seems to break the vertex color display in object mode (flat mode), disabling the extra features fixes the problem.

In case Sculpt Vertex Colors are enabled from Experimental, regular vertex colors also dont show in editmode & sculptmode

CC @PabloDobarro : not sure what the status of Sculpt Vertex Colors is here?

When Sculpt Vertex Colors are enabled, they are used as the default data for rendering colors in the viewport, so regular vertex colors are ignored. The idea of that is to prepare vertex paint to handle any kind of data (not necessary colors), so it does not make sense to render the data that mode edits as color by default.
