Crash when baking mantaflow #86164

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19041-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT ATI Technologies Inc. 4.5.14758 Core Profile Context 21.2.2 27.20.14535.1000

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.92.0, branch: master, commit date: 2021-02-24 16:25, hash: 02948a2cab
Worked: (2.91)

Short description of error
Blender quits when baking mantaflow smoke cache or noise cache using openvdb.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Baking either smoke, or subsequent noise layer using openvdb crashes blender, no crashlog is created without the use of the batch script, no error reported at all, the process simply just disappears.
Settings for mantaflow domain and flow objects seems to not matter, as it has crashed on a quick smoke on the default cube and setting up the scene manually, though higher resolutions exacerbates the problem.
my current system is ryzen 7 3700x, 32gb of ram, and 8gb radeon 5700xt.

I've tested 2.92 and the newest 2.93 alpha build (as of 1st of march) both crashed, i have also downloaded 2.91 from the archive, it is stable no crashes at extremely high settings.
Using unicache does not crash, neither does liquid simulations using openvdb, tested at 600 resolution 250 frames baked, this took a whole day, with out a single crash.

GIF of crash, it takes about 15 seconds before something happens, so it looks frozen until then, its simply because i did not move mouse :)

debug output file from the crash in the gif, this is from the debug_gpu.

Jeppe Christensen changed title from Crash at random when baking mantaflow to Crash when baking mantaflow 2021-03-04 12:02:49 +01:00

Did a fresh install of windows 10, installed drivers then build blender from source, still crashing.

I cannot reproduce this on Linux-5.8.0-7642-generic-x86_64-with-glibc2.32 64 Bits with 2.93.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2021-03-12 05:13, hash: a5c44265a3.
Here is the file I used:
smoke_crash.blend
@j.govertz Could you try the baking with that file, make sure it crashes with the latest 2.93? Then try again but this time turn the autosaves off in Edit>Preferences>Save & Load>Auto Save.

@filedescriptor yes, im in the process of building the newest build right now, should i start blender with debug_log?

That would be even better, yes, thanks.

First report, just pressed bake on the file you send. in the process of baking the next one

@filedescriptor no crash when turning autosave off, i have made the cache resumable, turned off adaptive timesteps and started it again. these are the settings i normally put in so will try that, but no crashes so far

it crashed. autosave off, adaptive timesteps off, modular replayable cache.

Just to be clear: with modular replayable cache, you mean that Type: Modular and Is Resumable is checked?

yes

here is the log from crashing with the file you provided, the only thing i did was enable "is resumable", and this is with autosave off

@filedescriptor i know a developer does not like circumstantial evidence, but when using houdini's gpu sparse solver which is as i understand is also using nanovdb, i will get a crash almost instantly, which led me to believe it was an issue with the nanovdb (amd driver or something), but seeing your bake corrupt aswell i can toss that theory out the window i guess, anyway thank you for taking the time to try and replicate.

False alarm: It works fine on my end (but I am on Linux so this might be OS specific). I just did not have enough space on the disk I wrote the cache to. Stupid mistake.

Here is the updated file with the right settings (that crash for @j.govertz): smoke_crash2.blend
Steps to reproduce: Press Bake Data.

@filedescriptor i have around 800gb free on the ssd drive that i cache to, just to rule that out on my end.

Blender 2.92 quits after I bake around 200 frames at a domain resolution over 90, it doesn't happen if I stick to 90 or below this is with any domain i try even the quick smoke object from the default start-up cube. It was fine over 300 resolution in the previous Blender versions.

Baking liquid at any domain resolution and lasting 2000 frames works fine and 4k renders renders taking over 20 mins work as normal, so I'm pretty sure it's not a heating problem.

I've tried newer drivers and a bios update a reinstall of Blender 2.92.

windows 10
CPU: i9 7920x
GPU nvidia 2080 Super, studio driver

I think I've fixed my problem by changing the domain format volumes to uni cache.

@lee.m.ashworth yes i mentioned above in my report that uni cache seems unaffected.

I think that's what made me try it I read it a day ago thanks for the tip.

I'm having this same issue. Here's my .blend file, system info, and debug output log. All I have to do is load this and try to bake from keyframe 1. It'll eventually crash before it completes.

I have had this same issue for weeks (was driving me nuts! - It only happens when noise is checked (even with autosave off, "Is Resumable" Checked) but the Uni Cahe setting fixed it.

For me it happened at exactly the same time - 23% of bake @250 frames or 32% of bake @ 400 frames (Spike in GPU and shut down of 2.92)

today i tested if i still had the bug, but i successfully baked 250 resolution in both 2.93 beta and 3.0 alpha builds multiple times today, so im not affected anymore.
both build is the newest.

related:

  • #86053 (2.9x - Crash while baking particle and/or smoke simulations)
  • #87789 (baking high res mantaflow sims ( both fluids and gas/smoke ) crashes blender 2.92)

fixed already by {8dd43ac23e}?

Would like to gather info on whether this is resolved in 2.93? (because the suspicion is that 8dd43ac23e already fixed this.

allways crash when import mantaflow generated VDB files. delete mantaflow from Blender. this is a pain to try working on this.
