Short description of error
Experimental Cycles displacement introduces rendering artifacts on some geometries made of triangles. The problem seem to disappear on quad geometry.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Open the attached "displace-problem.blend" file.
Render an image, or enable Cycles preview in viewport.
The left object is made of triangles, and appears with problems.
The right object is made of 1 quad, and appears fine.

I believe this is a limitation of the adaptive subdivide.
The object's topology is compromised in this situation.

Will confirm this now, looks like generated normals are flipped somehow.
Dont see this being mentioned in #53901 (Cycles adaptive subdivision tasks) yet, so needs some input from the Rendering module.

The 'True normals' indeed seem off, I've been outputing those using AOV and a more regular displacement texture to make normals easier to 'read'.

  • The upper mesh is subdivided from triangles.
  • The lower from a quad.
