Cant speak for the shading (would need to have a look at your .blend file), but I think adding an attribute after the instancing will kill the instancing and make the geometry "real" so to speak?

Maybe @JacquesLucke can confirm?

It might be that the normals aren't recalculated correctly, but I cannot reproduce it in my basic test file. Please simplify your .blend file and upload it here.

I can see that the outline changes and that is expected. However, I don't see the that the shading changes.

Can't redo in 99dabc156a macOS Intel HD 6000 either.
