VSE scene strips: Scene graph not updating correctly (?) #86682

System Information
Operating system: Linux-5.8.0-45-generic-x86_64-with-glibc2.31 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 1080 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 460.32.03

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.93.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2021-03-17 22:36, hash: bb6765f28f
Worked: None so far. Official 2.91 and 2.92 also show this behaviour

Short description of error
When adding a Blender scene to the VSE, some things don't update / refresh correctly. In this case DOF.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Open the attached blend file
    #86682.blend
  • Press space key to start playback of the VSE. See the front edge of the cube slowly become blurred despite the Empty that the camera focuses on is right on that edge.
  • Switch the scene from "CUT" to "Scene", and then switch back to "CUT" again.
  • If you now press play (space) to play back the scene, the front edge is in focus all the time, like it should be.

UPDATE: Problem also occurs with Eevee as "Scene Strip Display" but not with Cycles. The current display mode in the file I uploaded is Workbench.

Can confirm.

Not knowing the details, but it seems to me that in general, lots of updates are missing if Override Scene Settings is enabled and tweaks are done on the sequencer scene render settings (which are then supposed to be used).
But this is probably a different story (involving SEQ_cache_cleanup in more places?)

That being said, even when the "source" scene is already set to workbench with DOF - and Override Scene Settings is turned OFF - DOF is still wrong.

Issues with cache not being cleared are unfortunately expected here. That wouldn't cause issues with DOF though.

As soon as I added light to scene to better see render result of F12 render I wansn't able to reproduce this issue anymore. I had to reopen the file. I did this just to better see result of F12 render and that is correct.
This looks that offscreen render does handle target evaluation incorrectly. Looking at code I don't see anything obvious so far, but will check more in detail soon.

I have disabled caching on provided file, so no manual updates are needed.
