Whole PC freezes when trying to work with long footage video in VSE #87258

System Information
Operating system: Linux-5.4.0-70-generic-x86_64-with-glibc2.27 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 390.141

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.93.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2021-04-05 21:28, hash: 074b0b6da0
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
I recorded a film over night and intended to cut off the first few minutes (the end of the film before the one i wanted to record) the next day.
My first attempt resulted in a matroska-file where the sound speed was approx. 1/4 of the original (see video 1).
When i tried a second attempt, blender struggeled at caching the video, and my PC freezed. Only solution: Power off, then on.
In the third attempt i shut off the auto-proxi, and when i try to find the first frame of the good film, it always shows me the junk part (see video 2).

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Get a long m2t-video file and import it in the VSE.
Set the output to matroska, perceptually lossless output quality and vorbis sound.
Render via ctrl-F12.

Thanks for report, If I understand you, there are 3 issues being reported, related or unrelated.

  • bad audio in render
  • PC freezed during editing
  • problem with preview of video

I assume that steps to reproduce the problem apply to first problem, is that correct?

I have experienced slightly similar issues to 3rd problem, and the issue was my sound card malfunctioning. this was due to AV-sync enabled that syncs playhead to sound played by Blender. Try to disable AV-sync or sound output in user preferences. Removing sound strips is not enough. Blender syncs to played silence as well.

Problem 2 may be related to #87090 perhaps. I have not been able to reproduce it yet, so any more detailed info yould help.

Does this happen with any .m2t files? can I create sample by transcoding any video with FFmpeg? It would be best if you could upload small-ish sample so I can be sure that I am looking at the same problem as you are reporting.

1.: I tested the process with a much smaller m2t-record, and had no issues.
2.: After disabeling proxi build in the prefs, blender always shows frame 1, regardless where you click on the timeline.
3.: I don't understand what you are trying to explane. Maybe this short screenshot helps?

Here's the test of the small-video-case:
footage.m2t
output0001-1130.mkv
The settings are as in the original case with the issue.

@user1

Can you check if setting audio settings as follows resolves some of your issues:
untitled.png

I have checked file footage.m2t, can you clarify what is issue with that file? Is it only corrupted beginning of the file? or do you have any other issues with that particular file?
