System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.18362-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GT 710/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 390.65

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.92.0, branch: master, commit date: 2021-02-24 16:25, hash: 02948a2cab
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
All over the blender interface, this menu is a choice menu. You choose between materials, objects, pose libraries, or anything. When you select something using this menu, it doesn't make a copy. It just edits the current material or the current thing that you're working on. If you want to make a copy, you need to click the button at the red arrow.

The only place that this is not working properly is the action editor. To select an action, it kinda make another copy and put them in the orange action (edited action) instead of going to the edit or tweak mode like the up/down arrows. So, to select and edit an action, I have to press the arrows many times to reach the action that I want. I can't choose from the menu or it'll add the new action and mess with the current poses (instead of going to edit mode). There are already two copy buttons next to the menu just like any other menu. That is enough to make copies.

Important note: If the menu is supposed to make a copy, why doesn't it add .001 or .002 next to the same name of the original track? The current behavior can confusing for new learners as well because it just add unnecessary orange action in (the most top track). It doesn't work like the copy buttons. And it doesn't work like the other edit menus. It should work like any other select and edit menu.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Just select any action from the menu and it won't go to the edit mode.

To clarify:

  • this is only the case when NLA is used together with the Action Editor, right?
  • and the action you are switching to is already in one of the NLA tracks as a clip?
  • if so, you end up with with two of the same actions in two tracks
  • if you want to tweak an action that is already present in an NLA track, it is really probably better to select that clip in the NLA editor and enter tweakmode

If all of the above is true, then this will probably not be considered a bug.
Is this what you meant?
