System Information
Operating system: Linux-5.11.6-1-MANJARO-x86_64-with-glibc2.33 64 Bits
Graphics card: AMD VERDE (DRM 2.50.0, 5.11.6-1-MANJARO, LLVM 11.1.0) AMD 4.5 (Core Profile) Mesa 20.3.4
Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.91.2 (Image Editor), 2.92 (Compositor and Image Editor), 2.93, 3.0.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2021-04-17 20:13, hash:
8d30a7a1cf
Worked: 2.83.8, 2.91.2 (Compositor)
Short description of error
Compositor backdrop disappears if N-panel is toggled and reappears on MMB drag or moving the mouse towards the N-panel
similar issue in the image editor: rendered image disappears after switching editors or only appears after MMB dragging.
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Compositor (worked until 2.91.2, broken from 2.92 upwards):
In the default scene, press F12, use Shift-F3 two times to switch to the compositor, check "Use Nodes", add and connect Viewer node to Render Layers node, activate backdrop.
Press N - the N-panel appears, the backdrop disappears.
Move mouse towards the N-panel, backdrop reappears or
click and drag with MMB, backdrop reappears.
Image Editor (worked until 2.83.8, broken from 2.91.2 upwards):
In case of Blender Preferences - Temporary Editors - Render In: Image Editor :
In the default scene, press F12 to see the render,
switch to another editor, e.g. Shift-F3,
go back to the render with F11 or Shift-F10.
Now you only see the alpha checkerboard.
In case of Blender Preferences - Temporary Editors - Render In: New Window :
the new window will only show the alpha checkerboard and you need to MMB drag or press N to see the image
It also happens with factory-startup. On a different computer with intel integrated graphics, it is not as bad: only the frame of the compositor backdrop is not refreshed when toggling the N-panel.

I cannot reproduce this
Just to make sure, this is still an issue in a fresh build from https://builder.blender.org/download/, right?
Will move this to the Unconfirmed tag with the following consequences:
Yes, the regression is still present in:
version: 3.0.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2021-05-12 12:20, hash:
8dc95f61f3
as well as
blender-3.0.0-65244ac1c3f1-linux64 from builder.blender.org
Operating system: Linux-5.12.1-2-MANJARO-x86_64-with-glibc2.33 64 Bits
Graphics card: AMD VERDE (DRM 2.50.0, 5.12.1-2-MANJARO, LLVM 11.1.0) AMD 4.5 (Core Profile) Mesa 21.0.3
Even with a nvidia card, you should be able to reproduce the shifting backdrop frame without the backdrop image shifting, otherwise, that would be an issue of intel integrated graphics (Mesa Intel HD Graphics 520 (SKL GT2) v: 4.6 Mesa 21.0.3).
Compositor issue on different hardware:
Added subscriber: @alisealy
I couldn't reproduce the disappearing render.
However, for what it's worth, I can confirm there is an issue with the backdrop boundbox not updating when the sidebar is toggled.
(In compositor: enable backdrop and connect a viewer node, with viewer node selected toggle sidebar with 'N' key or from the view menu, backdrop boundbox does not update. Hiding the header also has the same problem.)
I think that may be an unrelated bug though.
Anyway, that particular problem seems to go back as far as 2.80, and is still present in current master.

Can confirm the backdrop bounding box now, but can we split this in a separate report?
Seems like the other issue (disappearing render) cannot be reproduced really.
The question is: can it not be reproduced by a user with an older amd card? As long as blender does not drop amd support, it can not be regarded as tested if no amd/mesa user tested it.
Currently I would assume that these issues belong together and that solving the bounding box issue might perhaps even solve (or hide) the other issue.
You could check D11423: Fix compositor backdrop gizmo refresh problem when toggling sidebar, I doubt it would fix the other issue.
Thank you for the fix!
You are right, it only fixes the gizmo, so the report can be split.
Changed status from 'Needs Triage' to: 'Resolved'
Retested with OpenGL: renderer: AMD VERDE (DRM 2.50.0 5.12.9-1-MANJARO LLVM 12.0.0) v: 4.5 Mesa 21.1.2: the backdrop/render does no longer disappear (in today's master and older releases), so this was a mesa issue that got fixed and the bounding box issue was fixed by today's commit.
So I'm setting the issue to resolved. Thanks!
