Light look-at transform can be activated using Shift+T on a lamp
Next hover your mouse cursor over the surface point where you want to pont the lamp. This is excellent!

Note: click on the images to see the animated version

While the lookat mode is active. Holding Ctrl will move the light. But it will also attempt to use the normal of the surface to rotate the light around the surface hit point. This gives erratic behavior.

Proposal

The artist should be in full control over the orientation of the lamp. I propose for move to ignore the surface normal and only hold the distance to the surface.

MoveFixed.gif

A different modifier (Alt?) would allow to orbit around the surface intersection point, giving the lighting artist full control of the orientation.

Furthermore, scrollwheel or MMB could be used to change the distance between the camera and the surface point.

@zanqdo : you might be interested in D7971: [WIP] Light LookAt Gizmo Enhancements (place shadows, reflections, ...)

The above can do what you essentially really want to do with lights [at least this is how I see it :)] -- place it in a way that the resulting position make the reflections or shadows appear where you want ("paint with light").

  • distance is supported in that patch
  • the "freeform orbit" -- well, like I said the patch has modes to basically place the reflection / shadow

I should pick that patch up again soonish (needs polish on the UX)...

I would love to hear feedback from you on this.
Regarding this design task here, not sure who could "approve this" (right now, this is in the "Needs Triage" limbo with apparently no way out?)
Will place on the desk of the User Interface module for now...

These improvements would be amazing to have for any lighter in Blender. Especially when you need a more precise control over the lights position/direction.
