Description

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19041-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce RTX 2080/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 462.59 (Nvidia Studio Drivers)

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.93.0, branch: master, commit date: 2021-06-02 11:21, hash: rB84da05a8b806
Worked: 2.92

Short description of error

Not an error perse but I didn't experience this in 2.92. I have 3 monitors. Blender opens on the primary but dialog messages such as the open dialog or the preferences open on the 3rd monitor.

I've gone through locating Blender on my primary screen and saving a default file. Which made things worse. Blender then started opening on the 3rd screen. Not the one I saved the default on. I had to disable my 3rd screen completely and resave a default file. With the screen still disabled, Blender and open/settings dialog windows opened on the main screen as expected.

Once I enable the 3rd screen again, Blender would open on the primary screen but dialog windows again load on the 3rd screen. I don't always have that 3rd screen on which is a pain if I try to open a project or import a model.

Oddly enough I do always have the 2nd screen on and nothing pops up there ever.

If there is any log file or system info that can provide answers let me know. I'll be more than happy to get what's needed.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
[Please describe the exact steps needed to reproduce the issue]
[Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible)]
I have no clue how to go about recreating this as it's not a process or workflow. It's an inherent behaviour.

Adrian Lyons (aglyons) created this task.

Could you please explain exactly how your monitors are arranged? Are they horizontal, vertical, some combination? Which one of these three is "main"?

I also have three monitors so I would like to recreate exactly what you see.

All driven by one RTX2080

VP3881 - 1st - Primary - DIsplayPort - Horizontal
VX3211 - 2nd - Extended - DIsplayPort - Horizontal
Sharp 55" 4k TV - 3rd - Extended - HDMI - Horizontal

Is this what you were asking? If I missed something let me know.

{please excuse my ridiculously messy desk}

Ah, It is having a vertical arrangement of monitors, where one is above any others (#3 of yours). Your virtual desktop (combined area comprising all your monitors) is taller than the height of a single monitor.

It used to be that child windows were always placed on the same monitor as the parent, even if you wanted them to be on different ones. That was fixed, so now any windows of any type can be placed, saved, loaded onto any monitor in any position. If those monitors are arranged in a horizontal row. This is because we have one calculation which screws up our placement of child windows, by only considering the height of a single monitor rather than the height of the entire desktop.

There is a patch here to fix it, hopefully it will get approved fairly soon: https://developer.blender.org/D10637

Harley you're a genius!

Great news that it's identified and a fix is potentially in play.

Odd why I never ran into this running 1.92 for the past few months?

Thx again!

@Adrian Lyons (aglyons) - Odd why I never ran into this running 1.92 for the past few months?

I just launched 2.91 and reset to factory defaults....

  • It launches on my main (middle) monitor.
  • I drag the entire window to my third monitor.
  • Edit / Preferences opens a window on my second monitor. (boo!)

I now launch 3.0 and reset to factory defaults....

  • It launches on my main (middle) monitor.
  • I drag the entire window to my third monitor.
  • Edit / Preferences opens a window on my third monitor. (yeah!)

It is this change, placing children better, that requires this other fix to be in.

Here's another interesting tidbit.

In Windows DIsplay Settings, I moved monitor 3 from above monitor 1 to above monitor 2.

Dialog windows now open on monitor 1!!

I just noticed that Windows has played a bit of a shuffle trick on me and re-numbered my monitors.

It wasn't like this when I set everything up. The lower left screen always had #1 on it.

Anyway, Monitor 2 is primary and when I moved Monitor 3 away from above monitor 2, Blender started opening dialogs in the right place.
