Multires baking fails on some multires objects #89263

With a multi-resolution object (multires modifier, and no other, added), with preview set to zero and sculpt & render set to two, on Cycles (for CPU or GPU), clicking "Bake" with my model will consistently give me the error "Multires data baking requires multi-resolution object".

This is a multi-resolution object. There isn't any non-manifold about it, or any hidden vertices, I've checked repeatedly; baking runs fine on a simpler, slightly sculpted, multires cube. Perhaps something is wrong with the model, but I have no way of determining what it is. Even splitting it up in edit mode ("P" and by selection) and attempting to bake smaller pieces is failing. Either the program has something wrong, or the error message desperately needs to be elaborated on, perhaps with a more specific and addressable complaint?

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

Open the attached file
select the Body object, and attempt to bake.

The problem is not "preview set to zero" or "sculpt & render set to two", the problem with the file is that the modifier is disabled for viewport:
