System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19041-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 471.11

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.93.1, branch: master, commit date: 2021-06-22 05:57, hash: 1b8d33b18c

Short description of error
I'm not sure if this is a bug or something that needs to happen but when you change the resolution of your domain it throttles the memory and goes back to normal.
Here is the video:

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Add a fluid modifier to a cube and change the domain resolution. I also set the cache type to resumable and modular.

Hi there,

I have just followed your instructions and can confirm this behaviour on my setup.

I have experienced this issue many times with multiple versions of Blender (2.92+) and multiple 'high resolution' simulations (>= about 150). Since there is no apparent change of the mesh and/or the particle systems when changing the resolution as described and probably nothing is simulated, I am surprised to see this memory spike.

A similar spike appears when I change the frame in a previously baked simulation of high resoution. Here the memory usage drops quickly from 100% to a few GB soon after the mesh is updated - e.g. during rendering. My status bar in Blender never showed a memory usage of more than a few GB. But this number may not be accurate with respect to the total memory consumed - e.g. may only show the usage for meshes and textures and not the siumlation data or is not updated because the program lags too much during this process. (In your case it showed me only 19MB the entire time.)

It looks like almost the entire available memory is reserved by Blender no matter how large the installed RAM is (needs confirmation). The entire 64GB are clearly not needed if my 32GB do not cause a crash.

I too would be interested to know the cause of this spike.

Best regards!

EDIT: My Setup:
System Information:
Operating system: Windows 10 Home (10.0.19042)
Blender Version:
Working: 3.0.0-alpha+master.17a67bf778b8

I don't think this is a bug because 800 divisions is really huge resolution, so I would expect this to use a lot of memory

@sebbas Can you confirm this?

If we move this out of the triaging queue (by changing status label to Needs Information from Developers), this needs to be the responsibility of a module (so a Module label must be added)
