System Information
Operating system: Windows 10
Graphics card: 2070

Blender Version
Broken: blender-3.0.0-alpha+master.fafd21b14c23-windows.amd64-release

Short description of error

There are situations where overlapped volume objects causes blocky renders with Cycles. I can see that voxel resolution difference might cause look inconsistencies with volume object but what I am observing here does not seem to be that, this looks like a strange artifact. See the images below.

Two volumes overlap (Blocky look)

One is disabled (No blocks)

The other one is disabled (No blocks)

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

Open the attached blend file

Render with both enabled and toggle the collections accordingly

Can confirm. Also with Mantaflow but i think its also vdb?

It happens with Manta flow VBDs as well when mixed with external VDBs. I am actually experiencing this issue with my project with larger simulations. I just created this scene for the bug testing purpose.

I did not try with Manta Flow domains overlapping with other Manta Flow domains

Here is a blocky render example for Manta generated VDB (the fire) overlapping with some high resolution commercial VDB. I do not know the source app of that VDB.

To add to this, even using a vdb along with a cube that has a principled volume shader on it causes issues.

This is GPU only. It works well with CPU Cycles in Blender 3.0 Beta (Oct 29).
Running Windows 11 with Nvidia Quadro RTX 6000 Driver 472.12

.blend file attached.

This did work on 2.93 hence raising the priority.

It seems the latest blender fixes this can you also confirm this @kursadk? I used 3.1 Alpha you should be able to download the latest daily.

I can confirm that this works with the latest alpha for 3.1

I also had this issue and the newer versions didn't fix it for me. One solution I found was placing a single transparent plane between the camera and the volumes. In my case, this miraculously have done away with every single artifact on my render.

on 3.1.2 and this issue is still present in Cycles renders
My VDB's are from Embergen.

but, big thanks to Gergo with the transparent plane workaround that seems to also solve this bug for me.

This is unfortunately still a thing in 3.3.2 and not resolved.
I created a smoke VDB with Blender, which I placed inside a cube with a Volume BSDF shader assigned to it.
I get blocky artifacts in the VDB, see attached image.

Hi this issue is still occurring in blender 4.0.2. Is there any possible solution for this or a future fix coming?
