Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.0.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2021-08-25 08:10, hash:
452cc01932
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)
Short description of error
I have a hard time in a project that involves several VDB sequences to be rendered. The rendering itself is not a problem. But I have lots of problems with Blender just "stalling" (not crashing but just stopping to react to anything) every few mouseclicks, especially when shuffling through the timeline.
It took me quite some time and work to reduce a project file to the bare minimum where I could reliably cause the issue. The whole production scene is much larger and stops even more often than this stripped down version.
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

On windows this causes crash, but this seems to happen in TBB library?
Unhandled exception at 0x00007FFDEC41D759 in blender.exe: Microsoft C++ exception: std::system_error at memory location 0x0000008473DFE420.
@Jeroen-Bakker Can you reproduce?
Very nice you could confirm this, @iss
On Linux it doesn't crash but makes the Blender task completely unresponsive. No CPU load at all.
I also noticed that it also happens if you hide the volume objects in the viewport (the "eye icon" in the Outliner). So even if the volumes aren't displayed they cause a problem.
If I also uncheck the "screen icon" that not only hides but also "disables" the volumes, the problem doesn't occur.

Don't think this has anything to do with tbb... For me it crashes immediately on file load in a debug build with ASAN enabled, seems to be trying to allocate a giant chunk of memory:
@JacquesLucke might know better though?
Full backtrace :
in
bloscFromStream(is, reinterpret_cast<char*>(data), sizeof(T) * count);
line,count
is 512, andsizeof(T)
seems to be 2, so not sure what happens here?Added subscriber: @brecht
Yesterday @brecht committed a VDB related crash fix (
b776c46d2f
) and it seems it fixed this bug report, too.With a master build before his commit Blender still stalls but now I can no longer reproduce it.
Maybe @iss or @mont29 can also give it another try as you were able to confirm my reported bug back then. And hopefully close this report afterwards :)

Not sure whether
b776c46d2f
is the fixing commit or not (I have build from master from last Friday that also seem to be working fine), but can confirm the issue is not reproducible anymore. Thanks for the head up, closing.I'm pretty sure it is. I could easily reproduce with a compile of master one commit before the one of @brecht but now all looks solid (fingers crossed). Thanks for closing this report.
