System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.17763-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 471.68

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.93.5 Release Candidate, branch: master, commit date: 2021-09-06 07:37, hash: 597d9518ef
Worked: 2.92.0 Beta, branch: master, commit date: 2021-01-14 20:13, hash: 30dd31a7b3

Short description of error
When playback sync is set to "Sync to Audio" and Output device is changed (Eg: Headphones are disconnected and Windows sets speakers as main device) the playback bugs out and stops
This issue persists in 2.93 and forward
This issue was mentioned before in #90454

Blender 2.92 (playback is unaffected by Audio output change Blender 2.93 (playback breaks when Output audio is altered)
2021-09-11 17-53-28.mp4 2021-09-11 17-52-16.mp4
*update v1: added 2.92 video as example
*update v2: Bug still persists in 3.10 ceec400975

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Have some kind of audio output device on windows that is unpluggable (wired headphones, bluetooth, etc)
  • In timeline change playback sync options to "Sync to Audio"
  • play animation for couple of seconds and stop
  • Plug off your headphones
  • play animation in blender again
  • playback will glitch and not play

Do you have the example of the .blend file? Also, try to render animation.

@dave9828 the file isn't the issue here, if you re-open blender, it'll work as per usual
the problem is between windows and blender audio communication, when an audio output disappears (eg, disconnecting bluetooth headphones), the blender fails to update to new audio output plus playback gets stuck (only if sync mode is set to "sync to audio"

I just tried this and it works fine for me (disconnected my USB audio interface and reconnected it). This bug should be fixed already (#88887) in the release candidate you mentioned, since ae7ec34dfe was commited 4 commits earlier. Can you check which audio device you are using in the preferences (System -> Sound) - is it WASAPI?

If it wasn't fixed by #88887 this was probably the same issue as #93312, so it should be fixed by now latest :D
