System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19041-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: Intel(R) HD Graphics 630 Intel 4.5.0 - Build 25.20.100.6471

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.0.0 Beta, branch: master, commit date: 2021-11-11 18:49, hash: bd734cc441

Short description of error
Selection instances inside of an object in edit mode is dependent on initial selection state of the object.
{F11822194 size=full}

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
untitled.blend

  1. Open the file
  2. Select the object
  3. Go into edit mode
  4. Try to deselect instances
  5. Go to object mode
  6. Deselect the object by clicking on empty space
  7. Go to edit mode
  8. Now instances are not highlighted (this seams is as it always should be no matter what initial state of the object was)

Thanks for the report, but this is not really a bug.
A distinction needs to be made between the active object and the selected object.
Note:

  • There can only be 1 active object in the scene;
  • Active object and selected objects enter edit mode together;
  • The active object is not necessarily selected;

There are other points too.
In the reported case, the object in edit mode can be selected (highlighted) or not. The important thing is that it is the active one.
There is a design task about this in #82359 (Stronger binding of Active and Selected).

I probably did not express my point clear on the subject. It does not metter whether initial state of objects is selected or active. When you go into edit mode highlighting changes its mode and instead of highlighting intier objects it highlights mesh elements. But this is not consistent with objects which include instances. In edit mode of such objects instances are still highlighted by highlighting of object mode, so to speak. I would expect instances to be not highlighted inside objects in edit mode.

Note #93573 (Regression: Selection outline of curves in edit mode) is related:

In #93573#1286538, @HooglyBoogly wrote:
This is because the evaluated mesh from a curve object is handled as an instance internally, and instance outlines don't turn off when in edit mode. So I see two options:

  1. Turn off instance outlines when in edit mode.
  2. Handle the instances that come from other geometry component types (points from mesh objects, meshes from curve objects, etc.) differently, only disable the edit mode outlines for them.

This seems to come down to a design decision, will set report accordingly.

I've tested this in 3.6 and it seems not an issue any more - can be closed.

Thanks for the update, closing.
So the outline for instances is disabled in edit mode.
