Circle Select and Border Select malfunction when their shortcuts are set to Mouse4 or Mouse5 #93777

opened 2021-12-06 23:21:49 +01:00 by Aaron Franz · 10 comments

System Information
Operating system: Windows 10
Graphics card: RTX 2080 Ti

Blender Version
Broken: 3.0.0
Worked: 2.93.5

Bug Description
When called using a shortcut set to "Button4 Mouse" or "Button5 Mouse", Circle Select and Border Select in the 3D Viewport will act as if the left mouse button is being held down continuously (The circle is continously selecting / a selection box will be drawn).

Pressing the Middle mouse button does not deselect, pressing the left, middle or right mouse button will instead end the Circle/Border Select.

If the shortcut is set to a keyboard button or the tool is activated through left-clicking a menu, the tools work as intended.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
On a fresh install of Blender 3.0 with default settings,
set the shortcut for Circle Select or Border Select to "Button4 Mouse" or "Button5 Mouse",
then press the assigned button

Hi, thanks for the report. That is expected behavior since by default event value for a mouse is set to Press, that's consistent with how other tools that uses mouse buttons behaves with same configuration. If you want button to select a tool but not activate it change event value to Click or other that suits you.

For more information how to use custom keymap visit this page:
https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/editors/preferences/keymap.html

Sorry I didn't test it with 2.93. Indeed with same settings they behave differently in 2.93 and 3.0. Advice about changing event value can still be relevant as workaround.

@ideasman42 was it intended change that mouse map type with Press event value in 3.0 will not wait for input regardless of whether Wait for Input is checked or not? Otherwise I can try to bisect it if needed.

If we move this out of the triaging queue (by changing status label to Needs Information from Developers), this needs to be the responsibility of a module (so a Module label must be added)

I've recently tested this problem on Blender 4.0, this time setting the Event value to "Click" as per Garek's suggestion. This time the select tools actually worked as expected when triggered from the shortcuts.

(However with "Click", the shortcut didn't register consistently on every press of the button. I've found that if the mouse is moved at all between button press and button release, the shortcut doesn't trigger.) Setting Event value to "Released" and increasing the X Max and Y Max values solves this for Box Select. For Circle Select it's enough to set it to Released.
