Do you use knife project tool? If yes then it seems you didn't select cutting object properly.

From the documentation:

To use Knife Project, first in Object Mode select the object to be cut, then in Edit Mode, select the cutting object (Ctrl-LMB), and choose Mesh ‣ Knife Project.

At list it looks that the message is about it.

I tried this and this only works if mesh to be cut has faces. Don't know how it used to work in versions before 3.0

Indeed it sounds like the change in Knife project workflow is the cause here. Furthermore, I can correctly Knife project that grid (with only edges) onto a plane correctly. Let us know if you are still running into this issue -- provide a simple .blend file showing your problem exactly if necessary.

i used the same file with 3.0 and 2.93. Version 3.0 does not allow the knife, the old one does{F12761050}

Again, this is a change in workflow from previous versions -- do not enter edit mode with both planes selected, only enter edit mode with the plane you want to cut. Try the following:

  • Select only the "Plane" object
  • Enter edit mode
  • Select "Plane.001" from the Outliner (or with Ctrl+Click in the viewport)
  • Knife Project
